It Started with a Dream
From the first time I first read about it in the 4-Hour Work Week, I dreamt of running my own location-independent business online. The problem for me starting out was (1) believing in myself enough and (2) figuring out a legitimate, tangible way to make that dream a reality.
It wasn’t until the age of 28 that I finally built up enough courage and decided to start taking my life more seriously that I embarked on my first official journey into Entrepreneurship. And to be honest, even that happened by accident…
Making My First Dollar Online
When you’re trying to figure out how to make money online, it can feel quite overwhelming. There is a shit ton of information out there and the landscape is constantly changing.
Dropshipping, info products, affiliate marketing, ecommerce, Amazon FBA, Freelancing, starting a marketing agency, productized service businesses…the options are endless!
When I started my first Freelancing business, I didn’t know what the hell I was doing. I was actually trying to sell ebooks at the time. As I went about hiring graphic designers for my ebook project on sites like Elance and Odesk (now Upwork), I realized that there was an opportunity to profit from other people’s skills (writing, graphic design, web development, etc.)…
It didn’t take long for me to drop the ebook project and start a Freelancer profile of my own on Upwork (Elance back then). Within two weeks, I started winning jobs and since I really had no skills at the time (but I could sell), I built up my own team and started outsourcing the work to others.
“EUREKA!” I had finally figured out a way to make money online and never had to have a boss again.
But that was only the beginning…
Turning the Freelance “Hustle” into a Freelancing “Business”
Once I figured out how to make my first dollar online, it felt like I won the lottery. I never had to worry about getting a job again or borrowing any more money from my parents.
I figured out the Freelancing game pretty quick. It didn’t take me long to start making five figures per month and to really start getting some traction for myself.
Pretty soon though, I realized that by doing project-based work and having to constantly find and sell new customers every month, that the “business” I was building myself wasn’t much of a “business” at all…
Eventually, through a lot of iteration and patience, I discovered how to implement recurring monthly revenue into what I was doing and build a team to handle the whole process so that I didn’t even have to be involved in the operation.
I finally figured out how to create something that worked without me and made money while I slept, without me having to do any of the work!
My First Successful Exit
Once I figured out how to create something that I would refer to as a legitimate “Freelancing Business” (some people call these Productized Services these days), I felt like I had really discovered what it means to be an Entrepreneur.
I was making money every month, other people were doing the work, and I didn’t have the stress of dealing with customers, or handling any more of the random day-to-day shit that I wasn’t interested in.
I had FINALLY created a legitimate asset 🙂
There was still one thing left that I wanted to do though…
The business I had built was doing well and didn’t require much of my time, but I was ready to move on. The idea of selling something I had created for a premium and learning what it took to sell a business was appealing to me.
In April of 2019, I decided to sell the first Freelancing business I created and had my first successful exit. In many ways, this moment marked both the end of a long journey for me and the beginning of what I consider to be the start of my career as a true Entrepreneur.
Investing, Advising, and Serving Others
After I sold my first business, I felt like a lot of things in my Entrepreneurial journey finally came full circle. I had successfully navigated the path from “Wantrepreneur”, to Freelancer, to legitimate business owner, to someone who had created something that someone else was willing to pay a lot of money for.
I feel humbled having gone through everything that’s taken place over the past five years and I’m incredibly excited about what’s to come.
My focus right now is on leveraging the skills that I have gained to invest in and create more products and services that bring value to the world. Currently, I am invested in one other business as an equity partner and I’m helping other Productized Service business owners level up their own companies through the courses and coaching programs that I provide through Productized.Me.
